Mitchelton Winery
The Mitchelton vineyard site took two years to find. In 1967 Melbourne entrepreneur Ross Shelmerdine commissioned wine industry legend Colin Preece to find the best site for premium wine grape growing anywhere in south eastern Australia. He chose an old grazing estate, then known as Blackwood Park, in the Nagambie Lakes district for its climate, soil and proximity to the waterways.
The site's history stretches back to 1836, when the explorer Major Thomas Mitchell crossed the river here on his 900 kilometre journey from Sydney to Melbourne. The resulting riverside town was to have been called Mitchellstown, but plans were abandoned when a better crossing place was found further downstream at what is now the town of Seymour.
Mitchelton, a past winner of Victorian Winery of the Year, offers you one of Victoria's best wine and food experiences. Discover more about your favourite varieties or explore whole new fields of flavour at daily cellar door tastings between 10am and 5pm.
Taste Mitchelton's extensive range of wines at no charge, including the region's 'Rhône originating' specialties: Marsanne, Roussanne, Viognier, Mourvèdre, Grenache and Shiraz. They can also arrange a tour of the winery, underground cellars and landmark 55 metre tower. Cellar door is also home to a public art gallery, featuring works by emerging and established Australian artists. The gallery is open daily from 10am-5pm and entry is free.
Round out your visit with a stroll beside the riverbank and through the accredited nature reserve, check out the view from the landmark 55 metre tower or cruise the Goulburn River by boat.
The Mitchelton Winebar Restaurant is known for Bernard Hayes' stylish cuisine, based on regional ingredients wherever possible. Bernard has been recognised in the last three editions of Melbourne's leading restaurant guide, The Age Good Food Guide. The restaurant is open daily for lunch from 11am and for evening and weekend events by arrangement.
